Applications

Ecoflex heating cable kits are suitable for use under ceramic, stone or marble tiles, in internal applications such as kitchens, bathrooms and conservatories. Cables can be installed on top of suspended timber floors or solid concrete floors. As the cable measures only 3.5mm in diameter there will be minimal effect on finished floor levels.

Cable Composition

As the cable is of twin core construction it requires connection at only one end, and is fitted with a 3 metre cold tail for electrical connection. The cable has two layers of extremely tough and durable insulation which provide protection during installation and ensures a prolonged cable life. As the cable is earthed it is also suitable for installation in bathrooms and kitchens.

Measuring up

The floor area must be measured, avoiding all permanent fixtures where the cable will not be layed, such as baths, showers, kitchen and bedroom units.

Once the usable floor area has been calculated, deduct 5% for perimeter clearance to reach the actual available heated floor area.

Once you have established your available heated floor area you need to choose the correct size cable kit. To do this pick the kit nearest but smaller than your measured area.

The heat output of the kit can be varied for different applications by adjusting the spacing between the cables.

The kit can be installed to give outputs of:

- 160W/m2 (7cm spacing) for optimum heat output (advisable for most situations)
- 130w/m2 (9cm spacing) for comfort heating
- 100w/m2 (11cm spacing) for background heating

Example : Kitchen with 15m2 gross floor area. Deduct area occupied by fixed floor units- leaves 11m2. Deduct 5% for perimeter clearance, leaves 10.45m2. Select nearest size down - for optimum heat = 9.2m2 Kit (at 7cm spacing).

Installation

It is advisable to install the cable on an insulated tile backer board such as Ecomax (available from our Insulation page) to minimse heat loss and ensure quicker heat up times.

1. Create a groove in the insulated tile backer board (or the sub floor if not using backer board) to accomadate the tubing for the floor probe.
2. Lay the cable out over the floor area. Use the template provided to confirm the correct spacing between the cables.
3. Once spacing is correct use the adhesive tape supplied to fix the cable down securely. Allow a 5cm gap between the cable and the room perimeter.
4. Insert the floor probe into the tubing.
A fully qualified electrician must now make the final electrical connections and fit the thermostat.

All cable kits will be supplied with a comprehensive installation manual.
